Am I a deadbeat because I disdain employment? More importantly, are YOU a deadbeat because you choose to build an online business?

You know you’ve been playing too many video games when you’ve lost all the pigment in your skin and you break up with your better half because she told you to get off the PlayStation, when its actually an X-Box. It’s one thing to be sitting, for hours on end, in front of an X-Box glued to the game controller, trying to beat formidable foes in Halo, and yet another when you’re on the computer trying to learn how to build an online business.

Sometimes others around you can’t tell the difference. This is why I’m here today…

Why Am I Writing This?

I’m being accused of being a deadbeat because I won’t go out and look for a regular full-time day job. Employment has never been my thing and has been this way all of my life. It’s not that I don’t like physical labour – that’s good for all men and women. It gives you exercise and helps build character. Our bodies are designed for work. It’s why we have hands that grasp and a mind to create things.

Menial labour is not my specialty when it’s something I have to do for the long term and am dependent upon it. This is what some people call “wage slavery.” There are some who are workaholics. I don’t hate work, but I do not like employment. There are a number of reasons for this. I have a list with about 100 reasons why employment is not good for you in the long haul, especially if you must force yourself to go to your place of employment every day!

However, I will work in a job when it’s absolutely expedient. I’m not above this and not only should you NOT quit your job right away, you should make darn’d sure your online income not only replaces the employment income, but also you’re sure the online income will remain consistent.

Doing otherwise will get you tagged a deadbeat in a heartbeat!

What Is A Deadbeat?

First I will tell you NOT what one is…

A person who is trying to build out a business and is working hard at it is not a deadbeat. Unfortunately, many people still see the Internet as fleeting, a hall of smoke & mirrors, and that anything on it is not “real.” This, in plain view of what the Internet has done to the face of the planet. If that’s not real, I don’t know what real is!

I’m going to play the victim for a bit here. I’m in a local community that firmly believes that employment is the only acceptable way for most people to make their living. There’s no excuse for not being in a job.

This is not to say employment isn’t expedient when it’s needed, but in my opinion, and the expertise of many entrepreneurs, long-term, permanent employment is ultimately bad for you. Yes, you do get income from it, but remember that 71% of the entire workforce is are in positions mismatched with their passion. That’s not good!

Then comes people like myself, who can’t stand working in a mundane position because he has to (being psychologically-unemployable.) It literally drives me up the wall and in these positions, I spend the entire day watching the clock Friday is always full of anticipation but Sunday evening rolls around and a lump forms in my bowels. That’s dread in the works.

Mundane labour means something totally different to me between the circumstances of being in an employment situation and volunteering such services to the elderly or those in redundancy. It makes a whole world of difference to me, so this should tell folks I’m not a lazy, good for nothing loafer because I have chosen the entrepreneur lifestyle.

A deadbeat is someone who routinely fails to pay their bills and obligations. This is a little different from the person who is attempting to build a business. Yes, sometimes we must rely on employment, but again – only to the point where you can use it to create the desired lifestyle you want.

Now, the credit card industry has a completely opposite definition to what a deadbeat is. You would think it would be those who don’t pay their credit balances on time, but quite contrary, the credit card deadbeat is that person who will not let their credit balances revolve. Muahahaha!

A deadbeat doesn’t mean someone who’s lazy, though the term is often interchanged with terms like “lazy” and “insolent.” Usually, a deadbeat refers to someone who doesn’t pay their child support. It has been taking on a much wider spectrum and often refers to someone who is almost constantly on the computer trying to build a business. In my case, like many others building out their businesses, it’s not easy and success doesn’t come overnight. If you don’t know where to go and what to do, you can easily wind up in information overload and confusion. However, if you know where to look, you can easily avoid conditions like this and have the outlet and input you need to actually succeed with a website and campaigns.

It appalls me that folks that look at others trying to build online businesses think that this should happen overnight, and if it doesn’t, the person on the computer is “fooling around” making bad decisions and not being responsible. Sad when I hear of husbands who are out of a job trying to learn online business and have wives that go around telling others how she can’t get her husband off the computer and out spending all his time looking for a job. Yes, this is not to say that job isn’t expedient, but should we put all our eggs in one basket? No. Couple that with Asperger’s Syndrome, like I suffer, and you’ve got people all over your case, because Asperger’s often comes with its victims becoming easily bored with jobs they must take on.

It’s like being incarcerated in a jail with no bars!

Save Yourself a LOT of Trouble and Frustration!

Successful people will tell you this first hand…

Keep your developments and ideas to yourself! If you work in a job with employees and management that know nothing about entrepreneurship and how to get there, you will waste your time in most cases. Learn from my mistakes in the job force – keep quiet about your passions! If they don’t match up with the gossip, sports, the pending company party and that next box truck with the shipment of raw materials for the company you’re working for.

One day, in one of those safety meetings, each of us were asked to give our names, and what we did over the holiday. I was honest. I gave the audience of fellow employees and managers alike, the likes of my endeavours, which was the writing of the book, Beyond Employment: The Implications of Being Employed and What You Need to Know About Wage Slavery

Yes – I was pulled aside and “coached.”

Don’t fret though! You like to share, I know. Do so, but be very careful what you say and who you say it to. It’s generally not a good idea to tell others what you’re doing. In my case, it has led to others thinking of me as a deadbeat. People, no matter how much you tell them until you’re blue in the face, that you’re learning online business and that it does take time! without them eventually turning on you and making you into that undesirable good-for-nothing!

Keeping it to yourself will save you the embarrassment of having your business fail. (Yes, even the best businesses have failed in their development and people will come along and throw daggers at it even after it has fallen.

The great thing is that there are communities devoted to those who want and need community support during the online business-building process. Today, unlike times past, you were on your own with this – and for some things, you still are, but wouldn’t it be great if you could be in a business community where your passions and interests can actually be discussed, where you can get coaching, tools and training on how to become an entrepreneur?
