Beyond Niche Sites – Building Authority Sites

Take your niche site and bring it to new levels! Here are a few implications of building authority sites and what you need to know about how they get started.

They All Start Small

Do you ever wonder how sites like Yahoo, Amazon, and eBay got started and how they got so large? I’m here to suggest that such sites began as a single notion in someone’s mind and the thought was recognized as a worthy ideal.

authoritysites2None of these sites were built and then opened to the public as we see them. They began as niche sites. Perhaps the ideals behind them were much smaller than originally intended, but here they are, multi-billion dollar enterprises. The beauty of all this?

They began with a few words, a few pages, an About Me page, and so forth.

A membership I am a part of, Wealthy Affiliate is one such site. Though it doesn’t compare to these huge giants, it is a thriving online community with tens of thousands of members, learning how to build online businesses for themselves. The site began with two struggling college students trying to make livings besides that of employment, putting to use those things for which they had passion.

In 2005, Wealthy Affiliate was a mere keyword list site. It has always been a membership site. Why this particular site? My point in showcasing this one is because, unlike many others out there in the online business training industry, the very thing that puts Wealthy Affiliate in the lead is the pay-it-forward spirit of the founders which spirit has been upheld by members since 2005. This is the one moving force that has brought this fortunate site to the top and still climbing at a phenomenal rate.

If there is anything I can tell you about going online to build a business, that would be to find out what paying it forward means and adhere to it. Make it the very cornerstone and foundation to your business and you will see wild success.

How Niche Sites Become Authority Sites

9-practical-tips-for-building-your-website-authorityMost sites start out as small niche sites, or as some know it, mini sites. These are sites that discuss one particular topic within a niche.

An authority site is little more than an expanded niche site. For example, a site about growing purple bell peppers is a niche site. It’s very limited to the one topic, growing, caring for and harvesting purple bell peppers.

An authority site is an expanded niche site, a site about a specific topic that umbrellas a number of smaller niches. A site like this would involve the creation, growing and harvesting of a vegetable garden, thus vegetable gardening discussing a number of different vegetables. The authority site would have many pages and posts and have pillar articles in them. Perhaps many of the pages would have advertising related to the content found on the pages and posts.

Authority sites continue to grow. An authority site like one about vegetable gardening can expand further out into the “Going Green” industry. Such a site would have hundreds or thousands of pages covering gardening, recycling, deriving energy from non-polluting sources, even home construction with environmental concerns in mind. The site is part of an entity, such as a corporation or LLC and has become a big business with team supports.

They all started on a personal computer sitting in a bedroom, living room or home office.

Wealthy Affiliate offers training for planning, creating and maintaining an authority site. To my knowledge, there is no other such extensive training available on this topic. I have had personal experience with WA’s Boot Camp on how to build and maintain an authority site and with this, have begun making a regular recurring income with my authority site campaign.

Wealthy Affiliate is not just a keyword list site anymore, though this service is still part of the curricula found there. WA is much, much more today. Please check the following video out…

Hi Daniel, just looking over your site and found this post on niche sites. I agree that all sites start small and then grow. Your site here is an example of that. You continue to provide value to your readers so I return occasionally to see what I can learn from you. Thanks for your insight.

Thanks to Jay, I would have never taken this personal blog and turned it into one where I brand myself. I may lose a tiny bit of SEO doing this, but I can promote much more than one thing on it, as long as everything I put on there has to do with empowerment. It’s basically what the site is about but finding the source of the crap programs (or one of the sources anyway) I’ve been leaning more towards reviews of these things to warn folks.

Thanks for the kind comments Glenda 🙂
